In our team assembly this week Tony, Parinaz and Liam received certificates for their excellent attitude towards learning. Keep up the great work!!

Waterslide
On Friday was Splish Splash Day for the Year 1 and 2 students. Every year they have a huge waterslide as part of their day. After the splish splash events are finished the rest of the school gets a turn using the waterslide. Here are some pics and a couple of short movies of us having our turn.

Buddy Class
Today we met our buddy class, Room 27. We were very excited to get to be the big buddies as we have always been the little buddies! We went to Room 27 and were given a little buddy. Then we chose a book from their class library and went outside to the adventure playground to read our book with our buddy. After we'd read our books it was lunch time and we went behind Room 25 & 26 to have a picnic with our buddies. We can't wait to spend time with them again!

Maths Strategies
Today we worked with a partner to see how many different strategies we could use on one addition problem and one subtraction problem. We shared and explained one of the strategies we used with the class.
Congratulations!!
Congratulations to our 2015 class councillor, Juliet and deputy councillor, Josh. We know you'll do a fantastic job representing Room 3 in 2015!

Happy Birthday Emily!
Today was Emily's birthday so we gave our craziest poses and then our most serious ones. Happy birthday Emily!!
Thursday
Two exciting events happened on Thursday. One was that it was the first day of Chinese New Year. Michelle, Nicole and Tony taught us how to say 'Happy New Year' in Chinese and we used that as our morning greeting for the roll. It was fun to learn a celebratory greeting in a different language. We also watched a short documentary on YouTube about Chinese New Year. When it was over we each wrote something we had learnt about it onto a post it note to share.
Secondly we had visitors in our school from Norway. Before they arrived we did some research online to learn some facts about Norway. We then decided it would be interesting to compare Norway with New Zealand.
Kakapo Art
Today we began working on the backgrounds for our kakapo sketches. We had practised sketching native New Zealand plants and then we drew them onto our background. When we were happy with our plan we used pastels to colour in our sketches.

Research
We are learning how to research a topic using a variety of resources including School Journals, library books and the Internet. Today we are researching the kakapo, our team bird. We looked on two websites to find some facts to add to our research chart. We looked at www.kids.nationalgeographic.com and www.kakaporecovery.org.nz . We were even able to listen to recordings of the kakapo's booming.

Cricket!
Five boys from our class have made the school cricket team. On Tuesday they will participate in a tournament at Lloyd Elsmore park. Good luck boys and have fun!!
Math Whizz
Today we got to use our brand new Chromebooks to begin Math Whizz. First we did an assessment that took us through all the maths topics. When we finished it set our individual programme ready for us to begin using. Juliet was one of a small group of students who trialed Math Whizz last year so she gave us some tips and tricks for using the website. We are excited to get started on our own tutor lessons to earn credits.
Summer birthdays
We had a catch up also for the summer birthdays we missed. Happy birthday Chloe, James and Brad!! I think Brad was overwhelmed by the amazing singing!

SSR
We are really enjoying our SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) in class. We have talked about the importance of reading for enjoyment. We are making sure that we have one chapter book at school for SSR and one at home for home reading. Our book should keep us interested for at least 10 minutes and we should be able to finish a book in about one to two weeks.

Kakapo
We are learning all about the bird that represents the Year Five team, the Kakapo. We have read about Richard Henry and his efforts to protect the kakapo. We've watched some great videos on YouTube of the kakapo. Today we began learning how to sketch a kakapo. Here are some pictures of us hard at work as artists.

Our Fabulous First Week!
What a super week we have had starting our learning journey together in this, our penultimate year at Cockle Bay School! One of the first things we've done this week is learn what 'penultimate' means. Ask us to see if we can remember and use it in a sentence.
We spent time this week talking about what is important to take along with us on our learning journey this year. We talked about how everywhere we go on our journey we leave footprints. We are making our own learning journey pathway display in our classroom.
Here we are working together brainstorming what we know about the Cockle Bay 4Cs

Our Ready Steady Go learning wall is off to a great start filled with our shared ideas.
One of the definite highlights of our week was the welcoming of our class pets - 17 tadpoles! One has already turned into a frog and we are having fun feeding him with a record of 9 flies given to him in one day! This is a picture of our first frog and his first fly. They sat like this for about an hour before the frog zipped out his tongue and ate the fly! Juliet was the lucky one who saw it happen.

photo booth fun
We've had fun using Mrs Nichol's daughter's wedding photo booth to take our individual start of the year photos. Don't we look like a crazy bunch!?
Senior Playground!
Our first class photo of the year was where else, but on the Senior Playground! Yippee!!!
Mrs Nichol's goal for the year is to climb to the top! (but will she get back down?!?!)
