Ben brought a great experiment into class to share with us today. It was called a lava lamp. He used water, oil, glitter and salt in a jar. When the salt was added to the oil and water mixture the 'lava' sank and then rose again. It was a great experiment about the density of liquids. Thanks for sharing Ben!

Our Art This Term
In Term One we have completed two pieces of artwork. The first one was to sketch our team bird, the kakapo. We also had to sketch a background of New Zealand native plants and then colour it with pastels. Once we were finished, and had cut and mounted it for presentation, we had to self assess it against our success criteria. We are very proud of our finished work.

Our second piece of art was a tiki or marae for our new theme, Mana Te Ao. First we had to find a picture on the internet that we wanted to draw. Next we saved the image to a Google doc so that we would be able to find the same image again. We then sketched our image making sure to add detail. We coloured using pastels, colouring pencils or jovies, depending on which would work best for our drawing. We printed off our original image to mount alongside our finished artwork. Our next step will be to self assess our work against the success criteria that we came up with for our project.
James, MacKenzie and Andy are very proud to have their work on display in the school entrance.
More congratulations!!
Congratulations for great work, super attitudes and amazing basic facts results!! Congrats on achieving 100% on basic facts James and Michelle!! Our first of the year.
We may have had some photo bombers. 😄

Multi-tasking
Sometimes country pride is just really important even during a school day. We watched the beginning of the Cricket World Cup semi finals while we finished our art.

Te Tahawai Marae
Today we went to Te Tahawai Marae (The Edgewater Marae). We had a fantastic time learning about the Maori culture and this marae in particular. Charlotte spoke the karanga greeting on behalf of Room 3 and 16. Once we were inside the marae, Tobey spoke the whaikorero and presented the koha on our behalf. Following the powhiri we shared hakari together as is the Maori custom. After we had eaten, Room 16 went to learn more about the Marae and Room 3 learnt about the kowhaiwhai patterns and got a chance to make our own. Then we learnt how to use the pois and sang a song using them. Afterwards we switched places with Room 16 and we got our turn to learn about the Marae and look at and touch the beautiful carvings. We had an excellent afternoon experiencing a Marae.
You can view a video of our afternoon by clicking here, or watching below.
Congratulations!!
Congratulations to Michelle for making it onto the Writers Quiz team for 2015. This is huge accomplishment as 35 students tried out for it and 10 were chosen. Well done Michelle! Happy reading!
Congratulations to Jade and Tobey for placing 1st and 2nd in the championship zone swimming finals at Lloyd Elsmore Pool on Wednesday. Jade won 1st in backstroke and 2nd in breaststroke for 9 year old girls. Tobey won 1st or 2nd in the final championship freestyle for 8 year olds. (final verdict is still coming - must have been a close race!)

Goals
We have been talking about our goals for this year. The children have used their end of year reports from Year 4 to create goals for 2015. They've published their goals and they are on display in our room.
Along with the children's goals I've set some of my own to share with them. My first goal was to climb to the top of the spider web in the senior playground on my birthday. The weather didn't cooperate on my NZ birthday but it did for my Canadian birthday so today I climbed the spider web. All went well until the children joined me. Do you know how much that thing wobbles with 25 kids racing to the top?!?
Goal accomplished and new goal set.

Sharing what we know
Today Room 17 came to our class and we helped them log into their google accounts for the first time. We also showed them how to bookmark websites and personalise their accounts. Mrs Nichol showed Ms Williams how to use the Hapara teacher's dashboard to share a smart copy with everyone in the class that will have their name on it and how to open the same browser tab on everyone's Chromebook. We also saw how the teachers can see everyone's screen to view our work with the click of a button. We had a great afternoon learning together!
