Google Open Morning

On Friday the Year 5 classes held an Open Morning to share with our parents and grandparents what we are learning this year with Google Apps for Education (GAFE) and how we are using our Chromebooks.  We had a tremendous turn out!  Thank you to everyone who was able to attend!
Following our morning of sharing, we had morning tea together.
One of the websites we went to was Kahoot.  The children really enjoy playing this on-line game.  If you are interested in creating your own Kahoots go to this website:  https://getkahoot.com/  The people who play your Kahoot with you, go to this website: https://kahoot.it/#/

Reading & Writing in a Different Way!

This week we practised our memorising and listening skills.  We worked together in partners to copy a story that was posted in different locations around the classroom.  One person was the dictator whose job it was to read and memorise a portion of the story and then tell it to the person who was the transcriber, the one who wrote everything down.  Between the two of them, they had to be as accurate as possible with words, spelling and punctuation.  It was tricky but really fun!  Next time we do this, we will swap places and finish the story.

Culture

This week we have began our study of the cultures that are represented in our classroom.  We have discussed the aspects that make a culture unique - traditions, birthplace, icons, food, celebrations, religion, clothes, language.  Each of us came up with something that represented our own culture and then we drew it onto our class mural.  After we drew it, we painted it as along with other pieces of the mural, to create a montage of icons and colours to represent ourselves.

Measurement

This week we have been working with measurement.  On Friday we had fun playing a game using measurement.  In groups of 4 we took turns choosing a card and naming a member of our group who we would measure.  We had to each estimate what the answer would be.  Then we measured the length and whoever was the closest won the card.

Happy birthday!

A huge smiley happy birthday to Maria!!

#Gallipoli

This week we compared forms of communication between 1915 and 2015. We discussed how difficult it would have been to keep in touch with our loved ones if we were in Gallipoli in 1915. We talked about all the many ways we can communicate now, most of which are instant communication, no matter where in the world we are. We imagined what it would have been like if the soldiers could have communicated like we can now.  We wrote Tweets from the Trenches and created Instagram pictures from Gallipoli as if we were there in 1915.

Welcome!

Welcome to our school and classroom, Oscar! Oscar comes to our school from China and is beginning to learn English. We watched a cartoon in Mandarin so we could see what it feels like to not understand what people around us are talking about.  This helped us understand a little bit of how Oscar will be feeling as he begins to learn English. It's great that everyone in our class is so friendly and welcoming!
